Essaouira has long been considered as one of the best anchorages of the Moroccan coast. The bay at Essaouira is partially sheltered by the island of Mogador, making it a peaceful harbour protected against strong marine winds.
During the 16th century, various powers including Spain, England, the Netherlands and France tried in vain to conquer the locality. Essaouira remained a haven for the export of sugar molasses and the anchoring of pirates.
The actual city of Essaouira was only built during the 18th century. Mohammed III, wishing to reorient his kingdom towards the Atlantic for increased exchanges with European powers, chose Mogador as his key location. He hired a French engineer, Théodore Cornut, and several other European architects and technicians, to build the fortress along modern lines. Originally called "Souira", "The small fortress", the name then became "Es-Saouira", "The beautifully designed".
Mohammed ben Abdallah encouraged the establishment of Jewish and other foreign traders. They numbered approximately one thousand by 1780. He also forced European nations to establish consulates in the city, but the city did not flourish, as she was too far from the traditional caravan trade routes.
It’s very necessary to visit in your excursion in Essaouira, the port of the city, the old Medina, the Skala and to eat grilled fish in the port.
In our excursion we propose a visit of the women cooperative of Argan oil and an other visit to the cooperative of carpets.
Approximately thirty five kilometres away from Marrakech, the Ourika valley spreads between the first foothills of the Atlas Mountains. Despite it being so close to Marrakech, this beautiful lush green valley is definitely one of the best preserved valleys in Morocco.
Thanks to its souk, inhabitants from neighbouring hamlets meet there to negotiate their precious harvests, purchase essential items and simply chat about the region’s latest gossip, all in an indescribable atmosphere; a mixture of peddlers’ shouts, hold-ups caused by old donkey-drawn carts and rousing good humour.
In the programme of our excursion, we propose to you a free visit to a typical Berber house, to see how the women prepare the traditional bred and how the berber families live. We includ in this visit a Bio – Breakfast prepared by the owners of the house (traditional bred, Moroccan menthe tea, olive oil from the garden of the house, miel of th house…).
We includ in our excursion an other visit to the « women cooperative » of Argan oil.
When continuing the journey along the Ourika valley, visitors are astounded by the banks of the river where the prairies are generously shaded by poplar trees and other weeping willows, unusual under this latitude. Visitors rave about this multicolour landscape which blends the ochre of the land perfectly with the neighbouring green.
When we arrive to the village of Setti Fadma you can hire a guide to visit and discover the 7 waterfalls (option)
Many local restaurants propose traditional cuisine there (Menu : about 10€)
